Can you share a bit about your background and how long you've been a part of the Clayton County community?
I've been a resident of Clayton County since 2006 when I purchased my home, marking my entry into homeownership. Over the years, I've maintained my residence and actively engaged with the community. Professionally, I'm known as Alston Shropshire, an author and transformational speaker. My civic engagement includes building relationships with our Congressional representatives and participating in local elections. Until recently, much of my community service was conducted anonymously, focusing on supporting essential institutions such as postal offices, sheriff offices, and shelters. However, I have been volunteering and committed myself to helping others for over 28 years 17 of those in Clayton County.
What do you think are the greatest strengths of Clayton County?
Clayton County's greatest strength lies in its trajectory of growth. We are witnessing a burgeoning community, safeguarded by dedicated law enforcement, including past Sheriff Victor Hill and current Sheriff Levon Allen, who patrol with both efficiency and compassion. The community feels safer than most countries in surrounding areas. Embracing the wisdom of our elders while amplifying the voices of the younger generation fosters a dynamic environment where inclusivity thrives. Clayton County in other words is growing and safer.
In your opinion, what are some of the biggest challenges facing Clayton County right now?
Several challenges confront Clayton County, including limited grants for homeowners to maintain their properties, inadequate accessibility to congressional representatives outside of election cycles, the absence of YMCA facilities for children's engagement, and the need to revitalize community bonds. The lack of higher end restaurants in the community which drives millions of dollars outside of the county, to those such as Fulton or Cobb. Additionally, there's a call to provide aspiring business owners with platforms for growth, wisdom and accessibility to venues irrespective of their financial backing.
Can you share a memorable experience or event that highlights the sense of community in Clayton County?
One notable experience underscores the accessibility and support offered by key figures such as Congressman David Scott's office, Sheila Davis, Sheriff Victor Hill, and Sheriff Levon Allen. Their openness to address concerns and engage with residents fosters a culture of empowerment and advocacy. Additionally, events like those hosted by the Hailey Bankhead Foundation, which promote community fellowship while supporting local businesses, showcase Clayton County's communal spirit.
How do you personally contribute to or engage with the Clayton County community?
My engagement with the Clayton County community spans various avenues, including active participation on social media platforms to disseminate pertinent information, support for local businesses even through referrals of those businesse, encouraging voter registration and turnout, and contributions to nonprofit organizations to address community needs. I am a Co-Chair of the charity committee with the Eastern Stars where it is my goal to bring more people into the county to help us continue to thrive.
