Can you share a bit about your background and how long you've been a part of the Clayton County community?
My name is Heather Bankhead, and I hold a license as a Georgia Realtor. However, I serve as the CEO of the Hailey Bankhead Foundation, Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting children battling cancer. My connection to Clayton County began in 2004, and it deepened significantly when my daughter was diagnosed with Stage 4 kidney and Stage 2 lung cancer in 2013. This profound experience ignited within me a passion for serving others and giving back to the community.
I am fortunate to be a mother to three amazing children, aged 25, 16, and 10, who continuously inspire me with their resilience and compassion. Actively engaging with the Clayton County community brings me immense joy, and I take great pride in contributing to its well-being. My dedication to making a positive impact in our community is steadfast, and I am profoundly grateful for the opportunity to serve and support those around me through both my professional and philanthropic endeavors.
What do you think are the greatest strengths of Clayton County?
I believe that the community events are one of the county's greatest strengths. With proper promotion, these events have the potential to significantly enhance community engagement and contribute positively to the overall well-being of the county.
In your opinion, what are some of the biggest challenges facing Clayton County right now?
From my perspective, a major challenge lies in our limited understanding of the resources available within our community and how to access them effectively. This lack of awareness often hampers our ability to address community needs adequately.
Can you share a memorable experience or event that highlights the sense of community in Clayton County?
Personally, I find the recent National Night Out events organized by the Clayton County Police Department to be exceptional community gatherings. These events over the past two years have been wonderful opportunities for residents to come together in a safe and enjoyable environment, while also showcasing local vendors, businesses, and resources available in our county.
It's unfortunate that more people weren't able to participate, as I believe these events deserve greater attention and participation. One suggestion to improve awareness could be to distribute letters through schools, encouraging children to take them home to their families. Additionally, implementing mailings and signage throughout neighborhoods could help spread the word and highlight the positive aspects of Clayton County, rather than focusing solely on the negatives.
How do you personally contribute to or engage with the Clayton County community?
Personally, I make an effort to attend as many county events as possible that fit into my schedule. Additionally, I endeavor to participate as a vendor at these events whenever feasible. Even if I'm simply strolling around distributing flyers for the Hailey Bankhead Foundation, my aim is always to exert a positive influence and make a constructive contribution to the betterment of Clayton County.
