Can you share a bit about your background and how long you've been a part of the Clayton County community?
Hello, I am Herman "Drew" Andrews and I'm your neighbor from Jonesboro! I moved to Clayton County 18 years ago after retiring from the U.S. Army. Since my retirement from the Army, I have been a community advocate serving underserved communities and marginalized individuals. I am currently a Trustee on the Board of Clayton County Library System, and a Board member on the Friends of Clayton County CASA helping our children in the foster care.
What do you think are the greatest strengths of Clayton County?
I believe Clayton County's greatest strengths are our diverse communities and social harmony. Our embracing the diversity and fostering inclusion have contributed to the cultures' richness. The chance for civic engagement is also one of the county's greatest strengths.
There are so many opportunities to participate in local government and community organizations allowing for the residents to address issues collectively and shape the future of our communities.
In your opinion, what are some of the biggest challenges facing Clayton County right now?
The lack of economic growth is one of the biggest challenges facing Clayton County right now. The people need jobs that pay a living wage in their communities to become financially stable. Currently, it is a struggle for many of our neighbors to afford basic needs such as housing, food, healthcare and transportation.
We have developers racing to Clayton County to build homes priced at $400,000 and above, but we are not bringing in companies that will pay salaries that will allow individuals access to those homes.
Can you share a memorable experience or event that highlights the sense of community in Clayton County?
My most vivid memory is how the community came together during the pandemic volunteering at drive-thru food drives to ensure our neighbors had food.
How do you personally contribute to or engage with the Clayton County community?
I continue to advocate for the underserved and marginalized people in our community. You can also, catch me at many of the volunteer events in the community.
